The Moving Image: The Languages of Video Art
The lesson explores the evolution of the moving image from the second half of the 1960s, through the use of different technologies: from television to video recorders, to monitors, and finally to electronic and digital tools.
The lesson on video art traces the origins and evolution of the moving image, following its development from the predominant use of the television (Nam June Paik), to the adoption of video for investigating the possibilities of the body and recording performances (Bruce Nauman), from its use as a tool to penetrate beyond the visible reality and access the spiritual realm (Bill Viola) to the recovery of the childish dimension through music and music videos (Pipilotti Rist), from the use of fragments and postproduction (Christian Marclay) to the adoption of video as a tool for political activism (Shirin Neshat).
