Shukla Sawant


Shukla Sawant is an artist and academic whose work explores themes of colonialism, postcolonial theory, and the intersection of art and history. Her works often delve into historical narratives and cultural identities, challenging viewers to reconsider established perspectives. Notable exhibitions of her work include Remembering Pandita (2009), which reimagines the life of 19th-century reformer Pandita Ramabai, and The Triumph of Labour (2006), presented at Anant Art Gallery in New Delhi. In addition to her artistic endeavors, Sawant taught Art History and Studio Practice at the Department of Fine Arts Jamia Milia Islamia from 1989 to 2001. She then joined the School of Arts and Aesthetics at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, serving as an Associate Professor of Visual Studies and later as a Professor. Her research interests include art in colonial India, South Asian modernism, and contemporary art movements. Sawant is also a founding member of the Indian Printmakers Guild, established in 1990 and was associated with Khoj International Artists association from 1998 to 2005.
