Ute Meta Bauer


Ute Meta Bauer is a Professor at Nanyang Technological University, where she serves as Chair of the MA in Museum Studies and Curatorial Practices, and is Acting Director and Principal Research Fellow at the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore. Over her forty years career as a curator and educator she has built institutions and created academic programmes, including NTU CCA Singapore, a national research centre she led as Founding Director for over a decade. AT NTU, Bauer initiated and co-chair the Master of Arts in Museum Studies and Curatorial Practice since 2018. Prior to this, she was an Associate Professor and Founding Director of the Programme in Art, Culture and Technology at MIT, USA. Bauer is a curator/co-curator of exhibitions and presentations, connecting contemporary art, film, video, and sound through transdisciplinary formats, including Document11 (2002), the 3rd Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art (2004), and the 17th Istanbul Biennale (2022) alongside David Teh and Amar Kanwar. She was also the Artistic Director of the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale 2024. As Founding Director of OCA Norway, she served as commissioner for the Nordic Pavilion at the 50th Venice Biennale. Bauer co-curated the US Pavilion for the 56th Venice Biennale featuring eminent artist Joan Jonas, and the Singapore Pavilion at the 59th Biennale di Venezia presenting artist Shubigi Rao. Her publications include Theatrical Fields: Critical Strategies in Performance, Film, and Video (König Books, 2016); Climates. Habitats. Environments. (NTU CCA Singapore and The MIT Press, 2022); Joan Jonas: Moving of the Land (Walther Koenig, 2023); and co-edited with Dr Karin Oen and Boon Hui Tan, SEA: Contemporary Art in Southeast Asia (Weiss Publications, 2022). Bauer has been an editor of Afterall and has written for Mousse Magazine.
