Christian Kravagna
Christian Kravagna is an art historian and curator. He is professor of Postcolonial Studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. His research focus is on decolonial politics of liberation in art, culture and theoretical thinking. In 2024 he curated the exhibition Avant-garde and Liberation: Contemporary Art and Decolonial Modernism at mumok – Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig in Vienna. Kravagna has authored and edited key works on transcultural art history, including "Transmodern: An Art History of Contact, 1920–60" (Manchester University Press 2022), and has published essays in journals such as Artforum, Camera Austria, and Third Text. He has curated exhibitions in Austria, Germany, India, and elsewhere, often exploring migration, globalization, and the politics of representation. From 2005 to 2014, he co-directed Kunstraum Lakeside in Klagenfurt, fostering contemporary artistic production and critical discourse. Through his research, writing, and curatorial practice, Kravagna has significantly contributed to expanding art history toward more inclusive, global, and critical perspectives, highlighting the complex histories of artistic exchange and transcultural contact.
