Giorgio Andreotta Calò


Giorgio Andreotta Calò studied sculpture at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice and at the Kunsthochschule in Berlin, graduating in 2005 with a thesis on Gordon Matta-Clark. Between 2001 and 2007 he was an assistant to Ilya and Emilia Kabakov. In 2008 he moved to the Netherlands, where he was artist in residence at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam (2009–2011). In 2011, Calò's work was presented at the 54th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, directed by Bice Curiger. In 2012 he won the Premio Italia per l'arte contemporanea, promoted by the Museo MAXXI in Rome, with the work Prima che sia notte. Between 2012 and 2013 he was artist in residence at the Centre National d'Art Contemporain at Villa Arson (Nice, France). In 2014 he won the Premio New York, promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2017, Calò was one of three artists invited to represent Italy in the Pavilion curated by Cecilia Alemani at the 57th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. Also in 2017, with the project Anastasis, he won the Italian Council grant promoted by the MiC, for the creation of a monumental installation presented in 2018 at the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam. In 2019 a solo exhibition was dedicated to him at Pirelli HangarBicocca. In 2024 he inaugurated a solo exhibition on sculpture at the Galleria Internazionale d'Arte Moderna at Ca' Pesaro. Between 2017 and 2024 he designed and realised a permanent work at the Castello di Ama, in the Chianti hills.
