Barbara Carnevali
Barbara Carnevali is Director of Studies in Philosophy and Professor of Social Aesthetics at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris. She also teaches at the Academy of Architecture of the Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI). Her work revolves around the notion of Social Aesthetics, which reflects on the relationship between social phenomena and aesthetic forms. Another significant strand of her research is devoted to philosophical modernity, in particular to the forms of the modern self, and to the relationship between philosophy and literature. Her scholarship brings together philosophy, social theory, and literature, examining the forms through which modern experience is represented and shaped. She sits on the editorial board of the journals Intersezioni and European Journal of Philosophy, and is a columnist for the newspaper La Stampa. Among her books: Romanticismo e riconoscimento. Figure della coscienza in Rousseau (Il Mulino, 2004); Le apparenze sociali. Una filosofia del prestigio (Il Mulino, 2012; new ed. 2025), of which a substantially revised and updated English edition is also available: Social Appearances. A Philosophy of Display and Prestige (New York, 2020); La linea rossa. Milano e il design della modernità (forthcoming, Feltrinelli, 2026). She edited for Einaudi the anthologies Georg Simmel, Saggi di estetica sociale (with Andrea Pinotti, 2020) and Teorie del design in Italia (with Emanuele Quinz, May 2026). She is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Consorzio per il festivalfilosofia.
