History of Contemporary Music in 8 Online Lessons
From Impressionism to Digital
This series of lessons, led by highly specialized instructors – music critics and journalists, radio hosts, authors, and prominent national teachers – offers an eight-session journey into the evolution of musical movements from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day, from the first impressionist experiments to the sound frontiers of the digital age.
The History of Contemporary Music course, consisting of 8 online lessons, began on December 1, 2025, and offers a unique opportunity to delve into the evolution of music, from the impressionist period to digital music. The complete package includes access to live lessons, which will take place in the upcoming sessions, as well as the ability to review the recordings of past lessons, available on-demand. Additionally, the educational materials provided by the instructors will be shared to support your learning journey.
The course is led by high-level experts, including music critics, Rai Radio hosts, professors, and musicians, who will guide the analysis and listening of some of the composers, musicians, conductors, songwriters, and bands that have revolutionized music, both in Europe and the United States. Each lesson will be enriched with selected musical pieces, aimed at progressively improving your critical listening skills.
The lessons, which will last one hour and 45 minutes, will take place every Monday from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM in Italian. In the last 15 minutes of each lesson, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions to the professors. The course started on December 1, 2025, and will end on February 16, 2026.
Live lessons will be conducted on the Zoom platform, while the video recordings of the lessons will be available on-demand via YouTube, with access guaranteed for three months after the course ends.
The course aims to provide the necessary tools to understand the major musical evolutions of the 20th century up to the present day, exploring different musical currents and styles. During the course, you will have the chance to delve into topics such as musical impressionism with Debussy and Ravel, futurism, expressionism, and twelve-tone technique with composers like Russolo, Schönberg, and Stravinsky, and discover jazz as a language of modernity through musicians like Ellington, Parker, Davis, and Coltrane. The course will also explore national and international singer-songwriters, including figures like Gainsbourg, Dylan, Cohen, De André, Tenco, Battisti, and Battiato, and will dive into concrete and experimental music with artists like Schaeffer, Cage, Nono, and Berio. Additionally, various musical genres will be analyzed, ranging from rock'n'roll to pop music, progressive to punk, and even hip hop. The course will conclude with a lesson dedicated to minimalist artists, ambient, and electronic music, exploring the works of La Monte Young, Glass, Brian Eno, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Radiohead.
The course is designed for music enthusiasts, students, teachers, and cultural operators who wish to expand their musical knowledge, even without prior experience or specific expertise in the field.
