Alfredo Cramerotti

Dr. Alfredo Cramerotti is a scholar, curator, and cultural entrepreneur whose research examines the intersection of contemporary art, media, and digital culture. As Director of the Media Majlis Museum (mm:museum) at Northwestern Qatar, he leads research-driven exhibitions and curatorial initiatives that explore the role of media in shaping contemporary cultural narratives. His academic inquiry focuses on the evolving nature of curatorial practice in relation to technological advancements, globalization, and digital transformation in the cultural sector.
Dr. Cramerotti’s scholarly contributions engage with curatorial studies, media theory, and the politics of visual representation. His research is particularly concerned with the epistemological structures of visual culture, the role of artistic practice as a form of knowledge production, and the implications of digital strategies in museum and exhibition practices. His theoretical framework integrates perspectives from aesthetic journalism, critical media studies, and digital humanities, addressing contemporary debates on the convergence of art and technology.
In addition to his institutional leadership, Dr. Cramerotti serves as President of the International Association of Curators of Contemporary Art (IKT) and Chair of Digital Strategies for the International Association of Art Critics (AICA). He is an advisor to international cultural institutions, including the British Council Visual Arts Acquisition Committee, the UK Government Art Collection, and the Italian Ministry of Culture for the Italian Council Program.
His curatorial practice encompasses major global art initiatives, including Noor Riyadh, Art Dubai Digital, The Lumen Prize, and the Maxxi-Bvlgari Prize. He has co-curated four national and collateral pavilions at the Venice Biennale, including Malaysia (2022), Mauritius (2015), Maldives (2013), and Wales (2013), and has organized over 100 institutional exhibitions in his roles as Director of Mostyn contemporary art museum, UK (2011–23), and Senior Curator at Derby QUAD, UK (2008–11). His curatorial research addresses the role of digital and media in exhibition-making, exploring the impact of interdisciplinary approach and disp0lay on audience engagement.
Dr. Cramerotti is an active researcher with over 200 published texts, including peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and monographs. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Critical Photography book series (Intellect Books) and the author of five books, including The Possibility of an Image (forth. 2025), Curating the Image (2020), and Aesthetic Journalism (2009). His scholarly publications contribute to contemporary discourse on the intersections of media, art, and curatorial methodologies, examining the role of visual culture in constructing and sharing knowledge.
