Francesco Maria Spampinato
Francesco Spampinato is a Full Professor of History of Contemporary Art, Director of the Second Cycle Degree Program in Visual Arts, and Director of the Summer School in Climate Change at the Department of the Arts of the University of Bologna. His research concerns contemporary art practices and visual studies, with a concentration on the relationship between contemporary art, media, and technology.
In light of his interest in issues of sustainability, Spampinato is the Principal Investigator (PI) for the University of Bologna of the Micro-Credential in Sustainability and the Virtual Exchange for Sustainability, two innovative, international, and intercultural study programs developed within UNA Europa and funded by the European Commission. The Virtual Exchange for Sustainability involves three UNA Europa universities (Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, Helsingin yliopisto/Helsingfors universitet, KU Leuven) and three African universities (University of Johannesburg, Université de Kinshasa, University of Nairobi) in co-designing a virtual exchange framework for high-quality sustainability education.
Spampinato has authored the books Echoes. Origini e rimandi dell'art rock britannico (Fondazione Luigi Rovati, 2025), Art vs. TV: A Brief History of Contemporary Artists’ Responses to Television (Bloomsbury Academic, 2022); Art Record Covers (Taschen, 2017); Can You Hear Me? Music Labels by Visual Artists (Onomatopee, 2015); and Come Together: The Rise of Cooperative Art and Design (Princeton Architectural Press, 2015). He has also edited and co-edited various volumes including Seamless. Arte, visualità e cultura elettronica in epoca post-pandemica (NERO, 2025), Skank Bloc Bologna: Alternative Art Spaces since 1977 (Mousse, 2024); The Pandemic Visual Regime: Visuality and Performativity in the Covid-19 Crisis (Punctum Books, 2023), and GMM – Giovanotti Mondani Meccanici. Computer Comics 1984–1987 (Nero, 2021).
